A Whitecloak in a camp is served a full bird to eat. He discusses the meal with a Yellow Aes Sedai, who tied to a stake, her hands amputated. He steals her ring and adds it to a collection on his belt. The Aes Sedai burns as he finishes his meal.

Moiraine, Lan and the Two Rivers crew are riding quickly away from chasing Trollocs. They arrive at Taren Ferry and wake the ferryman to take them across. Once across, they see Trollocs and a Fade at the dock. The ferryman wants to go back for his family, but Moiraine destroys the ferry in a whirlpool. The ferryman goes after it and drowns.

The group camps and discusses Nynaeve and Laila’s deaths, and one of them being the Dragon Reborn. That night, Moiraine awakens Egwene and tells her she has the ability to channel One Power. Egwene tries to lie down next to Rand, and he says he wants to be alone.

Perrin nurses a wound on his leg while thinking about Laila. Egwene sits with him, and they wonder if they will ever go back home.

Rand awakens coughing and pulls a dead bat out of his mouth. He sees a man standing in the trees with glowing eyes, then wakes up from a dream to see a real dead bat on the ground. All the other kids also had dreams of dead bats. Moiraine tells them that dreams can be powerful. Rand confronts her angrily about where they are going. He bickers with Egwene, but Mat convinces the boys to keep following along.

The group comes across Whitecloaks. Moiraine hides her Aes Sedai ring. The Lord commander briefly questions them, and so does the Questioner Whitecloak from earlier, until finally, they are allowed to move on, after Moiraine tells them about the Trollocs. Moiraine explains to Egwene about how Aes Sedai twist the truth.

The kids sing a song about Manetheren, and Moiraine tells them the true story of Manetheren.

Perrin is approached by a small pack of wolves. One of them licks the wound on his leg gently before they run off.

Egwene awakens to see a Fade watching them. The group rides away, Moiraine too injured to ride her own horse. Trollocs chase them but stop at the edge of the abandoned city of Shadar Logoth. Lan leads them inside. He tells them the history of the city and not to touch anything.

Mat gives Perrin his dagger that Laila had made. Perrin assures him his sisters will be fine.

Mat wakes abruptly and explores the city. He finds a ruby-hilted dagger in a box. As he picks it up, he hears a horse screaming as it is consumed by a black shadow. In the intervening madness, Perrin and Egwene are separated from Rand and Mat outside the city,

Lan and Moiraine can ride out on their horses but Moiraine is incredibly injured. A dagger appears at Lan’s throat. It’s Nynaeve!
